SPECIFICATION

COMMONLY USED ON

APPEARANCE

CHARACTERISTICS AND USES

Chromic Anodize

.00005"- .00030"

MIL-A-8625C

Aluminum & Aluminum Alloys

Clear to Black

Good resistance to corrosion. May be used as a paint base. Decorative. Available in many colors, however, parts more easily colored with the sulfuric anodizing process.

Sulfuric Anodize

.00005"- .00100"

MIL-A-8625C

Aluminum & Aluminum Alloys

Clear to Black

Good resistance to corrosion. May be used as a paint base. Most commonly used anodizing process. More flexible in dyeing parts than chromic anodizing. Do not use where joints or recesses exist to trap solution.

Chromate Conversion Coating

.0002" max

MIL-C-5541

Aluminium & Aluminum Alloys

Clear to Black

Good resistance to corrosion. May be used as a paint base. Decorative. Available in many colors. Good electrical conductivity. Excellent protection against tarnishing, finger marking and other conditions tending to produce surface oxidation.

Straightline

N.A.

.

Aluminum & Aluminum Alloys

Brushed

Belt sanding produce parallel scratch lines in one direction. Decorative. Non-reflective surfaces. Straightlining is usually followed by sulfuric anodizing.

Passivation

.0002" max

QQ-P-35

Stainless Steel

None

Passivation is a cleaning process used to remove small particles of corrosive foreign matter embedded in the material from machining. No material buildup obtained

Cadmium Plating

.0002"- .0005"

QQ-P-416C

Steel, Iron

Silver-White

Good corrosion resistance. Nice appearance. Less apt to darken or form corrosion products than zinc plating.

Manganese Phosphate

.0002"- .0006"

AMS-2481

Steel, Iron

Black

Good for use to aid on breaking-in on moving parts.

Zinc Plating (Electro deposited)

.0002"- .0010"

QQ-Z-325C

Steel, Iron

Bluish-White to Black.

Good corrosion resistance. Very easily and rapidly applied. Retards tarnishing. 4 to 6 cheaper than cadmium plating.

Chromium Plating (Electro deposited)

.0001"- .0002"

.

Ferrous, Non-Ferrous and some plastics

Dull to Bright

Excellent resistance to wear, abrasion and corrosion. Low coefficient of friction. High reflectivity. Popular decorative coating. May be used to build up surfaces.

Nickel Plating (Electroless)

.0002"- .0016"

QQ-N-290A

Ferrous, Non Ferroud and some plastics

Dull to Bright

Excellent resistance to a wide variety of chemicals and corrosive atmospheres. Excellent plating for decorative appearances. May be used to build up surfaces. Not recommended for non heat treatable metals.

Silver Plating (Electro deposited)

.0005" min

QQ-S-365C

Ferrous, Non Ferrous and some plastics

Dull to Bright

Good resistance to many chemicals and corrosion. Excellent decorative appearance. Excellent electrical conductivity and low contact resistance.

Gold Plating (Electro deposited)

.00002"- .00150"

MIL-G-45204B

Brass, Copper, Nickel, Silver, and some plastics

Yellow

Good resistance to tarnishing, chemicals and high temperature oxidation, good ductility, thermal reflectivity and electrical conductivity.

Tin Plating

.0002"- .0020"

MIL-T-10272A

Ferrous

White

Good resistance to corrosion. Attractive appearance. Easily solderable. Soft and ductile.

Copper Plating

.0001"- .0010"

MIL-C-14550

Ferrous, Non Ferrous and some plastics

Pink or reddish

Good resistance to corrosion. Nice appearance. High electrical and thermal conductivity. Good wire coating. Used as an undercoat for chromium and nickel plating.
